Partitioning is an Oracle Database 11g option designed to support Very Large Database (VLDB) environment. Partitioning is designed to enhance the manageability, performance, and availability of a wide variety of applications. Partitioning allows tables, indexes, and indexorganized tables to be subdivided into smaller more manageable objects, called partitions. Database partitioning is entirely transparent in SQL statements, partitioning can be applied to almost any applications. The wide ranges of partitioning methods enable developers to design database applications that are scalable, well tuned to support SQL Intensive systems for VLDB.
